05Tanauan as the country’s skimboarding capital, is it working?

The efforts to project Tanauan as the skimboarding capital of the Philippines, is a noble move to put the town in the sports adventure map of the country. Tanauan, as far as we know, is just blessed with natural waves suitable to the requirements of the skimboarding sports. It is but fitting that we maximize this natural resource to stage this otherwise unknown discipline known as skimboarding sports. Now on its third year, the National turned International Skimboarding Competition staged by our local government unit every Easter Sunday is, indeed, laudable.Nevertheless, a look into its status among the country’s sports festivals and what it has gained for the town is needed to ascertain the future of the said competition.
Basically, few reasons always give rise to any organization of a festival or competition. I can say all of the reasons below combined to the birth of Skimboarding Competition in our beloved town: a. To make money It would help us if we assess whether all these objectives are being met now that skimboarding is on its third year staging. The first question is: Is it making money? With sponsors supporting the event either in cash or goods, the organizers do get a fair share of resources to further elevate the event. This may come in terms of offering higher prize catch. If this happens, it will attract more participants and showcase a higher quality turn out for the competition. Another is, getting a more professional sports event management team to bring on a new dimension to Tanauan Skimboarding Competition and make it truly national where all other important aspects of developing the image of the event will be addressed. However big the support they get, it does not matter, so long as it goes to where it should go. And it is all accounted for, right? After all, when it gets to the coffers of Tanauan, it immediately becomes people’s money. One thing the organizer should consider is to project the event as “the sports competition with a heart†so as to get new and bigger support. They should allocate part of the money raised for noble projects, i.e, construction of lights along the Sto. Niño beach front, construction of a skimboarding center, etc. These are but sample projects, but it sure would add a lot of prestige to the project. The Skimboarding Competition has already etched its mark as a much-awaited event in Tanauan.I guess, for skimboarding spectators, it is already an institutional event,no matter that it was just organized three years ago.And it truly has chosen a very appropriate time to stage the event when everyone is in the beach, that is, during Easter Sunday. In terms of economic impact, I guess we can say nothing solid has yet been achieved. This is still a sports of no real commercial value. For one, it has not changed the lives nor propelled its players to greatness unlike other sports discipline where winners experience sudden surge of monetary rewards and fame. I guess, the sports itself needs a lot of image-building. No Tanuananon can also claim to have earned a living out of doing business in skimboarding.
b. To create a community event
c. Economic impact it would bring
d. For education

Finally we have photos…Thanks Mr.Teston..Well appreciated…Congrats to the organizers…More power..

Good sample projects Ernie…Maybe because the Sports is just new in our place, economic impact to our town is not yet seen…If the LGU and other organizers will really increase their effort to make it big and popular, commercial business will follow, like a stores who makes quality skimboards, mini hotels and resorts nearby, training and information center for tourists, etc…I hope this concerned people will really work hard in advertisement to make this event more famous internationally…Being known globally, it will attract investors. And this will be a challenge to the LGU and other NGO to make investors believe of Tanauan’s great potential in business excellence…If Siargao which is a far island makes it in surfing, why not in Tanauan who are more accessible. We have to move on now….After elections, whoever wins, set aside politics and start to work….Wake up TANAUAN..

I don’t know what you mean by “commercial value”. This event is already attracting skimboarders from other countries. There is already advertising and companies willing to sponsor the event.
And come on, it’s just like any other sports… it evolves. A walk of a thousand miles always begin with a first step. And I think it already helps our young people to love the sports. The positive side? It makes them stay away from drugs and other non-sense activities. It also helps them develop competitive skills.

I mean “it keeps them away from drugs”… And hey, I like the idea of a Skimboarding Center… I imagined it fully landscape which will house a shop, an indoor and outdoor cafe, a gallery that will showcase everything about skimboarding and how it started in Tanauan, etc. Any thoughts and ideas?
I will post a design of the building whenever I have time.

This sport is such an attraction to our town; however, it may be known worldwide, but this sport seems to be less attractive to others who are fond of big waves. So in order to keep them and be part of this sport is to improvise the presentation. Funding is the key to a better and fun event!
Nevertheless, skim boarding is taking off to its progression.
WELL DONE!!!

one thing that is good about this sport is much safer than riding those 10-15 foot wave in surfing. it seem easier to learn as well. i think that it will spur more interest for the youngster, even tourist and balikbayan with kids if we set up a center that will provide short lessons to learn the sport.

before we go too far, let’s do something to our shoreline first because the sea is eating it up. is there a remedy for this occurrence? can we take back what the sea has taken away from us? i had been hanging out on the beach since i started skimboarding and it bothers me a lot to see the shoreline getting closer to the cottages.

I’ve been showing the pictures to a Belgian friend and his interested to do business with me if i go back home what i’m afraid is Mr. BIR you know I’m just afraid he might not like our system “sistemang corrupt”

wow..superrr, progressive tanauan. i really missed this event. when will be the next competition, sometime n december? insha allah!!! webmaster please post more picture during the events. damo nga salamat!

One of the ways to prevent it from advancing towards our shoreline is by constructing a seawall. If you want it back, then it should be reclaimed. Both of course are expensive means, but the latter is even more expensive I think.

Aw ngay-an? Is this a recorded fact? If so, then we need a clinic nearby for doctors who especializes on orthopedics…
Masurong ini.

just reading through the comments.
why not put up some sort of “skimboarding lessons” syempre for a FEE, with our own champions as the teachers? para naman may source of income hira.
my son was lucky enough to have been “tutored” by the champions when we had our vacation here in tanauan in 2005. we chanced upon them practicing one afternoon. longkoy is my umangkon and his cousin (the champion) was there also so i was able to ask for free lessons for my son, syempre with the help of brothers darwin and mervin who are also my umangkons. too bad, my son is too heavy for the skimboard.
believe ako sa sipag at tiyaga nira magpractice, even on an empty stomach.
SO, WHY NOT HELP THEM PUT UP SOME SORT OF “SKIMBOARDING TUTORIALS”? Para naman may income hira . This could also attract some “skimboarding wannabes” from other towns.

The success of any organization relies heavily on its ability to being able to set out its priorities and to being able to provide services that would respond to meet the present and the future needs of the community. In order for the community to reap the harvest of its toil, the government has to set aside money (procurement) for the improvement of the venue. The community can benefit out of this through proper exposure/advertisement by the leaders of our town putting Tanauan, Leyte in the map in order to attract tourists. Tourists and visitors are the number one consumers which the business sectors can benefit from. The government should also study what Chamorro government did on its island. With no mineral resources to boast, the government has to turn to and rely solely on tourism as their main source of income. Thousands of tourists flock to this small island in the Micronesia, in which the Philippines’ beaches, including Tanauan, is far better than theirs; yet, tourists around the world would prefer to go to Guam than to coming here to the Philippines or to Tanauan, in particular. This is something which the Philippine government and the Tanauan officials has to look into in order to be competitive. With limitless world economy, anybody could develop a better venue and could take over all the credits as the “skimboarding capital of the world”.
