10Market day in Tanauan, Leyte
Filed Under (Native Delicacies) by Ernie Teston on 10-05-2007
I happened to get back to Tacloban City for a two day roadshow presentation to launch a livelihood grant program last April 19-20, 2007 for the benefit of our brothers in Region VIII (The program is called Grassroots Entrepreneurs for Ecotourism or aptly acronymed GREET. It was conceived to enhance the livelihood opportunities preferably for promising young entrepreneurs who can best explore the inherent tourist drawing potentials of the ecotourism sites. The GREET Program would provide livelihood grants amounting to Php 50,000 up to Php100,000 to deserving groups or individuals with feasible entrepreneurial/business proposals in eco tourism sites in the country. Tanauan residents, though not necessarily an ecotourism site, can avail of this grant through submission of a business proposal which has something to do with positioning Tanauan Leyte as the skimboarding capital. This is rather an emerging eco-sports tourism site, I am telling you. Now, this is a GRANT my dear readers! If you’re a local resident and interested, you may visit our website: www.wowpinoy.net/greet).
Well, what can make you say one person is lucky? Well, talk about me. Yeah, I was able to go home practically free! Working for the Philippine tourism truly has its advantages. I was really laughing on my way home Saturday afternoon after staying at MacArthur Park & Beach Resort for two nights and the two days of grueling roadshow campaign. Whew! Home at last after some time! I extended my stay definitely!
Anyway, this blog is not about the said grant and my being lucky (hehehehe), but on the activities one usually do while in town. This is also intended for our fellow Tanuaneños abroad who may want a glimpse of that one special place, a seemingly ordinary yet important location that has definitely contributed a lot to who we are as a true-blooded Tanuaneño. I guess you are dying to see the development that has occurred while you are away, nowhere else but our public market!
My dear kababayans, guess what? Whenever I am in town, I usually spend half of my day in our public market. I was just so lucky it was Sunday the next day and a market day or a “tabo†in our town. I know each hard core Tanuaneño who may have left the town really long for Tanauan staples and ignite those childhood memories spent choosing the best suman, moron, sagmani, palawan, gaway or your favorite childhood “ice crumble†with our suki tindera, to boot. Returning home would not be complete without the-so-called “panmemerkadoâ€. And there could be no better day than to do it on a Sunday morning, right?
Well, I am letting you in to the wonderful world that is our Agora Public Market. With these videos and various pictures, I just hope these help diminish your homesickness of our beloved home town.
Now called Tanauan Agora Public Market, it is still the center of commerce for local produce of our farmers. Now, do you believe that as early as 12 am, our local farmers and vendors flock to the market to get a strategic location to sell their wares? Some Tanuananons and even nearby towns also make it a point to go to the market as early as 4am to have the best lot of our local crops.
Nothing much has changed in terms of the market’s physical infrastructure, but I guess, for those who have not returned home for the last ten years, a look at how our public market has evolved, is best explained by the video and pictures below. I guess, one feels he enters a different world when inside the market. Stalls lining up and almost endless at that, waiting, barking and calling on for buyers and suki’s, just suddenly grab you and you end up psyched to dig deep into your pockets:
Do you want some more? Well, I just acted as a tourist, that is for your benefit, and took some short videos of what’s inside the busy market on a “tabo†day. Wow, I was rubbing elbows with other shoppers. That was how full the market is with people buying their needs.
The video you will see will illustrate how it has evolved from the time you last came here. Noticed any changes?
I have also seen how fake videos have also invaded the public market and sold without hesitation. I have seen the same kind as well in all my travels. Thus, no one can really stop this piracy. It has truly burgeoned into a multi-million industry. And Tanauan is no exception, mind you.
The Agora Public Market has also extended in terms of size. It has now covered up to Burgos St. and gone on to cover two blocks more near the adjoining what we usually call as “Pawa St.†In here, you can find the different rootcrops, animal feeds, and vegetables. It now houses the terminal for tricycles bound for suburbs. Other terminals can be found from two corners of the adjoining market streets, one in the cross-section of Imelda and Burgos Sts. and the other street which escapes my memory.
Also, for your information, we now have a 24-hour bakeshop located corner of Burgos and Imelda Blvd. Different grocery stores are also found along Imelda Blvd., burger joints and the tasty lechon manok (the best ever!).
Truly, it’s time you come back to our beloved town. Go to the market and come out withâ€hukot-hukot†of memories you will never experience anywhere else. As for me, I went back to the market four times as I had to! I first went home with lots and lots of rootcrops (camote, gaway, palawan, saging, balanghoy, ube, etc.). I also had to buy the dahon ng gaway for the “dagmay†(who does not love this utan, sige daw?)It was so heavy I had to go back for my next round of purchase, this time I came home heavy with lawlaw, bulad, barol and bagoong hipon. I was not contented yet, so I had to go back anew! This time, I went home with nuos, turingan, liempo baboy and pakdol (it was requested by my father, so I had no choice but to buy it). And who would forget, a kilo of lechon baboy! That made my shoulder ached!
Found below are pics of the different delicacies, fish products, down to lawlaw, lansones, and other drool-worthy foods reflective of us Tanuaneños. Hope these make you salivate, hehehehe.

The fourth and last time I went back to our Agora, I brought home with me the kakanins: moron, suman, lidgid, the colorful puto, sagmani, kutsinta. I also went for the mani, piñato, sweet tamarind, bukarilyo and other sweets. Mind you, I almost forgot to buy that so much-missed tablea, for the hot tsokolate to match my barol and dagmay!
But the best experience of going to the market and the beauty of it all is, you get to meet your former classmates, friends and even former sweethearts and ex-crushes whom you haven’t met for the longest time! Thus, tsismisan and kumustahan were inevitable. “Who marries whomâ€, how many children do they haveâ€, how one has changed in appearanceâ€, etcetera, etcetera. Some classmates even turned out to be the tinderas and tinderos, you end up buying even if you don’t need his/her wares nor want it!Hay, Tanauan Agora Public Market! Without you noticing it, you also lost track of time. And in a flurry, you are invited to come over for dinner, get-togethers and reunions!
And whew, how exhilarating it was! Now, you may ask why I managed to come back to the market four times? Well, I happen to live on this street just next our market and just beside the 24-hour bakeshop. Thus, the “I shall return†motto was an easy excuse!
Anyhow, I hope that with this blog, I have rekindled old memories and the food we yearn for from our cherished Tanauan Agora Public Market.

Hi marverick, Diri ako stateside. So happens nakarating dito. hehhe! by the way, I’ve seen the hotcakes..Thanks. They look like tortillas, but of course, I would prefer to eat that kind of hotcakes than tortillas. I love Tanauan delicacies, with the exception of gabi and sagmani. Pero, ang moron, bandera and lidguid, hmmm, they’re they best…:)

Di ako Pilipino! Ako ay isang Waray!! Joke hehe!!
SARAP MARAHIL ITO ‘NO?? Me kaputian at belyako.Hehe!!
Man Tanauan is really going up!!! An amon sulod. I’m proud to be a taga sulod!! It’s cool man!!
Where could they be now?? Hi everybody!! What’s up??
Kaya kung sakali me mag magandang loob na mag post uli dito, umaasa ako na me pahiwatig kon ano an “sagmani”. If someone happens to know one Mr. TEOTIMO CATAN , (I believe he is a teacher, just don’t know what he teaches and where) kindly inform him of this long posting.I would like to communicate with him. Or if you Mr. Catan reads this, please post something. I understand he (TEOTIMO) was a candidate during the last barangay elections. An independent one. He was not lucky though!!
Ciaoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!
