Of Tourism, Economic Growth, Statistics and Your Business Leveraging Economies of Scale to Make A Prosperous Town (Part 1)

Filed Under (Economy) by Sarah Songalia on 18-06-2007

Tanauan, Leyte, a town strategically located in Eastern Visayas, has recently been exerting efforts to become the Skimboarding capital in the Philippines. Will this development spur the economic growth of the municipality? Will this attract investments? How will this affect the small and medium enterprises in the locality? Can the Local Government Unit support the development? Is this what we really want to do? Or are we just blinded by the promise of modernization that we are ready to step back and allow our community to be transformed into a business hub where the characteristics of big cities will soon be adopted by our hometown?

Don’t get me wrong. I, just like all of you, would like to see Tanauan, Leyte become a prosperous town. Yet, as in my previous blogs, is Tanauan, Leyte ready to embrace the lifestyle brought about by modernization?

Before I go further, lets together make a random list of economies of scale present in our beloved hometown. The first thing that will come to our mind is the “somewhat forgotten” brick and pottery industry in Brgy. Canramos. Next we have our native delicacies, foremost that would come to mind is the binagol being made by the Alvarez’s. Our lechon, which is incomparable to the taste of what has made “Mila’s Lechon” in Manila a millionaire. Our farms (we cannot discount the fact that most of the rich in Tanauan, Leyte owns vast hectares of land) which bring to the weekly Sunday Tabo, rice, camote, bananas, vegetables, coconut to mention a few, of which our farmers depend for their living. If we embrace modernization will these industries be taken cared of?

I am quite saddened by the string of thoughts being given by our fellow Tanauanenos living outside Tanauan, Leyte. I know we have seen the fruits of modernization in the cities where we are residing, which is why we wish the same for our hometown. Come to think of it, yeah, we would like to get there but in time. I would like to wish that economic efforts be centered on the industries that give our hometown the revenue, no matter how meager they could be.

Just to give us all an example, Tanauan, Leyte is primarily an agricultural community. But are all our farmlands irrigated? Have we done something to increase the production of our farmers? Why is it that in other countries farming is such a viable and lucrative business while in our town it is such an occupation that nobody would like to have. Our farmers are so poor, not empowered to even know life beyond farming. Yet, they are very knowledgeable in farming! How come their lives have not improved? Is it because our local officials are focusing more on propagating schools that would produce more “white collar job” workers?

Ceramics is a major attraction in any trade fair. Our pottery and brick industry in Brgy. Canramos is, was and still the same since I have been a kid. Does this mean that the people who have been doing this were not exposed to the bigger opportunities that their trade held? If we can exert efforts to become the Skimboarding Capital in the Philippines, would it be possible to exert the same effort to build the ceramic industry, which has been there for a time, and thus, enable our locals to compete with what is made in other regions?

Starting something from scratch is very difficult. It needs the skillful manipulation of all economic factors to bring about relevant change in the community. This is the reason why, I am saying in this blog that we have to focus on what we have and improve them. After all, are these not the same industries that propelled all of us to strive hard to reach the heights where we are now? Are these not the same industries that put all of us to school and made us who we are now? Opportunities are abundant to the entrepreneurial eye. You may make the same salad that I make but I can make more money than you do. The secret is in differentiation and branding.

The key statistical indicators of our region will not lie. Given a tolerable margin for error it is still the most probable state of our economy. To focus on what industrialized countries are doing and apply it to our hometown is a recipe for disaster. Is it not that what we know is what will propel us to success more often than not?

Progress takes time but let us always remember that behind the hills of hindrance lies the valley of success. So now, why don’t we start thinking on what more can be done of our economies of scale to make them the instruments of progress in our hometown? Bloggers, its time to share our thoughts. Lets keep blogging!

Go Forward Tanauan

  1. I totally agree with you. We should focus more on how we can maximize our existing resources rather than in venturing out on some businesses we’re not really familiar with. We can always start from scratch the way some prosperous towns and cities did and then once our town is already established economically then we can always upgrade.

…I think it would be a great idea if the local entrepreneurs be given like a ‘pautang’ for capital with low interest so they could start up and establish their businesses.

  2. i would like to start this with questions: What were the purposes of the numerous “Lakbay Aral” of our barangay officials? Was it to observe, learn, educate, etc. our barangay officials? or was it just a chance to travel? From its name “Lakbay Aral” it is understood that it was some sort of an educational trip with the purpose of educating/getting some ideas from the places they visited, which could be applicable to our own barangays. What have they learned? Has this been put to practice or even just tried? or municipal taxes/income just wasted?

baga napakiana gad la ako kay para masayod kun para ano gud man adto nga mga Lakbay Aral. Diri ba upod han Lakbay Aral an pagpromote han aton local products/ han aton natural resources, or make some tie-up with other municipalities, etc.? or waray ko la kakita pa iton epekto or resulta hadto nga mga Lakbay Aral. Kay baga hit inuli uli ko ha Tanauan baga asya la gihap it akon nakikita, ma may-ada man diri baga enough nga masiring kita nga nauswag na iton aton ekonomiya. Tanauan has basically remained the same.

That “pautang” is a good idea… but this should be managed by someone who has the best interest of tanauan in his/her heart, not his own interests, not the interest of his relatives and friends, but for those citizens nga responsible enough nga gagamiton iton iya uutangon para hit purpose nga required hit pagpautang, and most especially maaram magbayad hit utang. (hehehehehehe) Kay damo gud iton maaram la mangutang pero diri maaram magbayad.

    - Banig ngan siphid industry hit Kiling
    - Sundang/Bolo industry hit Bangon
    - Uring industry hit Malaguicay ngan Maribi
    - Basket industry han interior barangays

  4. I’ve been suggesting on agricultural prospects but I think the people are focussing on beautifying tanauan. they prefer on grandeur and aesthetics to promote tourism. waiting tourists to come and spend money in tanauan takes only once in every real tourists. I’m not expert in agriculture but I’m exposed to it. In that sector we have a lot of choice in which the tanauananon can be self sufficient for local consumption at first. Have anyone tasted turkey? I’m suggesting it for pork alternative. Tilapia is a success in europe, and by the way tuna is diminishing it’s because the japanese market is insatiable. you can check on some eco friendly websites. another thing is china can’t produce enough fish for its people so maybe someday you can see chinese fishermen within the parameter of leyte and samar. so why can’t the munusipyo give a glance on fishing industry? or maybe I’m not really informed on their projects. anyone ever tasted goat milk or goat cheese? i’ts buonissimo. I think ambao is the best place in this sector. trying it on local consumption is not a problem for those who loves cheese on their sandwiches. and one more thing fresh goat’s milk is adaptable for asian rather than bovine’s milk. it’s specially reccomended for lactating mothers who needs natural calcium. I’m still researching on duhat. ay anay daw ano ba adto an duhat ha waray? been staying here in a country that doesn’t speak english. salit ubos na it ak vocabulary………

  5. waray waray has a good point, i definitely agree with him. i think in agriculture we should, the fact that we have vasts of land that is waiting to be utilize and cultivated. with new methods and technology that we can apply granting our farmers are willing to learn the new technics. i think that it will be a bright spot for economic growth. i would like to cite if i may, one example, our local rice production i can almost be certain that our supply cannot sustain year in year out even only for our local consumption. therefore, a change is needed in a way we farm our lands. THERE ARE LOAN PROGRAMS THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE WILL AND CAN PROVIDE. IT MAY BE THROUGH COMMERCIAL OR GOVERMENT BANKS THAT IS TIED UP WITH THEM. BUT I CAN ASSURE YOU THERE IS MILLIONS OF PESOS TO BE LOANED EVERY YEAR THAT IS (DA)SPONSORED FOR MEDIUM, SMALL AND MICRO BUSINESSES. LGU WILL HAVE TO TIE UP WITH ONE OF THE AGENCY EXPERT TO PROVIDE INFORMATION REGARDING SOME OF THESE BENIFITS AND PROGRAMS TO OUR LOCAL FARMERS THAT THE DA OFFERS.who knows this could really open up a real opportunity
    for growth.

  6. Everyone has a good point… Kulang la kita hin determination to really uplift our agricultural resources.

On the other hand, laborers are also at fault due to the fact that they get to harvest the produce first before the landowners. Hira na it binubuligan, hira pa it karuyag makadamo when it should be an equal division amongst laborers and landowners. Sanglit waray asenso! We can hardly find sincere and trustworthy laborers. Though we have an interest in maximizing the use of land.

Perhaps other citizens are more laid back than being competitive. So to a modernized town that, indeed, will be a big change to the many.

    Wishing to a posperous hometown!!!

    God Bless You All.

  9. Professor Alejandro Roces once said, “I know that there are some good trees that provide good shadows; but in my country, I do not need shadows; I need light.” Education is light; and for some, this is the only means to get out from the bondage of poverty. But some government officials may take advantage of this misnomer. They know that in order to boast their term of office and to maintain a good statistical record, they have to open barangay high schools thereby promoting mass education in order to elevate the town’s literacy rate. Perhaps, we should examine the kind of education being offered to them. I was watching the “ANC” channel a month ago and the focus of the report was on Philippine educational system. There were random of questions made by the TV reporter ranging from geography, math, and science to some Filipino teens. Some high school graduates (presumably) could not even identify simple locations in the Philippines, much less, world geography, simple math, and simple science questions. I was totally shocked by their answers. Almost 75% was ignorant or does not know anything at all to these simple questions being asked of them. It was really embarassing to watch. Being trained as an educator in the Philippines (AB/BSE, LIT) and in Guam (MA, University of Guam) before entering the medical health profession in Maryland (graduated from University of Maryland), this was really shocking to me. I think our young kids are graduating from high school without mastering the required elements needed in order to graduate. There is no standards/mastery of knowledge in order to advance to the next level. The government is offering mass education without mastery of subject matter at the expense of tax payers. Where would this kind of education lead to? One, decline in the Philippine educational system; second, promoting kids to seek “white collar job” versus technical trades and or farming industry; third, the promotion, indirectly, of a bad attitude of Filipinos, which is indolence. It is in this belief that it is shameful to work when their hands become dirty and would rather stay idle, doing nothing because it is already pre-printed in their minds that a “white collar” job is waiting for them. It is alright for them to be dependent from their parents even beyond the age of 21 and most Filipino parents would tolerate this kind of behavior (being satisfied seeing their children’s diploma hanging on the wall), perhaps to boast their morale. It is alright to dream, to be ambitious, and to aim for the highest noble profession. But we must also face some facts/reality in life. Therefore, I would suggest, in order to augment the poverty level in Tanauan, the following: One, promote the back to basics, which is improving the reading, writing, and arithmetic; second, open an informal form of education (instead of opening barangay high schools) to train kids develop new trades and skills (craftsmanship) to help parents boast family income; third, provide scholarships to deserving students, who, in return must give back to the community (upon graduating from college) in the form of service; fourth, tourism industry will always be an asset to the community by exposing the town’s trade and industry with the belief in the theory of “Law of Supply and Demand”.

In summary, Tanauan does not need barangay high schools who would just train the youth to be indlolent; rather, Tanauan youths need to possess skills and craftsmanship to help parents improve their family income. I am not in favor of college mass education either. I am not in favor of Tanauan School of Craftsmanship being converted into a college educational system. We do not need engineers, nurses, and teachers ending up as house keepers and entertainers in other countries, like Hong Kong and Japan, because it goes back to the Philippine government as a boomerang - very degrading to ones race; at least I can speak for myself being married to a Caucasian. Therefore, the government should focus on the resources there is available in the community and develop them with the guiding principle that there will always be a meager resources but with proper management, the economy will succeed. Education is not always attained by going to college obtaining college degrees and diplomas. I must say education is a tool; one, to help us in dealing with our daily activities in life; second, to help us in earning a decent living.

  11. I got the chance to read the blogs and Waray Waray has some good points (how could I miss that). One, I teach “Wellness” class to the community and I might as well share some of the tips to everyone interested (Wellness 101:) different from the topic being discussed). According to some research, Turkey meat has the least cholesterol of all animal products. Therefore, if anyone interested to staying healthy and to living longer, go for Turkey meat versus beef and pork (but as much as possible avoid meat/animal products because they contain the saturated fat, bad for the arteries). These two (beef and pork) have the most cholesterol there is available and these two can easily clog up your arteries. There were research/studies conducted on which country has the least cases of heart diseases throughout the world. The researchers found out that the people living in the Mideterranean region have the least cases of heart diseases ( countires like France, Italy, Greece, etc.). The researchers relate this to the diet the people living in the region is having. One, they do not eat meat everyday (perhaps once a week); second, they eat fish and vegetables a lot; third, they use olive oil most of the time (olive oil was first discovered in that region). As a challenge, why don’t you think of what is a healthy food to prepare when cooking? One, avoid food that contain saturated fats (such as animal products, coconut oil, palm oil, or even coconut milk or hatok in Waray); second, avoid trans-fatty-acids (such as butter, margarine, lard, etc. any cooking oil that is solid at room temperature); third, choose food that contain unsaturated fat (easy for the body to metabolize/breakdown) such as vegetables, vegetable cooking oil (such as Crisco, safflower, peanut oil, etc.), fish, fish oil (contains omega 3 fatty acids, which lowers down the bad cholesterol or LDL). It may be true that goat’s milk is better than cow’s milk. One, most Asians are lactose intolerance. This means that if Asians drink whole milk, Asians would be ending up running to the bathroom right away (diarrhea). It is because we did not get exposed to drinking cow’s milk at an early age; hence, we do not have the bacteria in our intestine to aid in the digestion of whole milk (would there be a difference in milk composition between goat’s and cow’s milk?). Second, cow’s milk is tainted with hormones. Most farmers, in order to increase their cow’s milk production, would inject some hormones to the cows. And in return, the consumer will end up as the benefactor of this hormone when drinking cow’s milk tainted with hormones. This could be the reason why here in the States, girls mature early and start their period as early as 9 years old; second, this could also be one of the contributors leading to obesity, and who knows, perhaps cancer (knowing that extra hormones not normally produced by the body is bad for you if unregulated). But for expecting mothers, mother’s breast milk is always the best for your child. If you are a working mother, use a breast pump to pump your milk out and you may store your milk in the refrigerator freezer for up to three months; for longer period of time for up to 6 months, you will need a freezer.

Oh well, life really sucks, isn’t it?; anything that taste good is bad for you. But remember, healthy mind, body, and spirit equals a healthy person. Take care of your health because “health is wealth” as the old saying goes. Hence, eat in moderation. Ayaw pagkinaon hin hinatukan nga dagmay pirmi kay mamanason ka. Manhuhubag it imo bitiis. Ipadara ngadi ha akon kay agidaw maiha na gud nga waray gud ako makakakaon hin hinatukan nga dagmay ngan padisan pa hin barul nga bulad. Ambot la. Kidding aside, yeah, this would lead to circulatory problem and cardiac overload which would eventually lead to heart disease. Salit amo ini it akon guin huhunahuna kon gusto ko gud makakaon hin dagmay ngan barul nga bulad (sour grape). My regards to all Assumption Academy students, staff, and to its Alumni. My special regards to my scholar, Airha Mae Lagera. Keep up the good work.

  12. Generally, development of a town is influenced by Geographic location,
Along Rivers, shorelines where the means of living abound.
Tanauan was once a glorious town. one of the oldest, older than that of Balanguiga, Samar.
But much of its historic significance has been erased by its local political of clergy’s indifference.
It needs to be a tourist destination.
It must sustain population growth. (Tacloban beings its principal cource of commerce and Abuyog its supplier of staple commodity and Mindanao for livestock)
And primary fuel for progress…. not trading but production.
    Onward (are we indolent) Tanauanons?

  13. Medardo N. Bernal, Kumusta na former neighbor ha Buntay. Ano mag e-enter-enter pa ba kita hini? Hain ka na yana. Please send me an e-mail para magkakumustahan naman kita. It was really my happiest day living in Buntay with good friends and neighbors like Middie. Anyway, indolence, I believe, is not a Filipino trait prior to the coming of the Spaniards. Based on Jose Rizal’s writing on “Filipino Indolence”, he relates the Filipino indolence due to the hot temperature (could be, who would want to do manual labor under the blazing sun?). Personally, we inhirited this trait from the colonizers, wherein these Europeans who came to our country would do easy jobs under the roof, sitting down, with hands covered with gloves to protect their hands from getting dirty and earning big bucks; whereas, the Filipinos were in the filled cultivating the land, sweating out, and earning a penny. Who wouldn’t want an easy life? Hence, we copied it from our colonizers and we inhirited this colonial mentality. This is just my personal belief and I have no research to back this up. It may be true that “reading facilitates learning, but the knowledge of the world is acquired by reading the minds of men and studying the various editions in them”, said one philosopher, which I agree. Vicarious experiences can not supersede personal experiences in life. You see it; it is happening and to deny that indolence does not exist at all in our culture is a mirage and a fallacy. I am hurt by it because I am also a Filipino but to deny that this does not exist at all will not help us to focus on the issue; hence, we will not be able to move on and solve the problem that is happening in our country at all by ignoring this fact.

Agi iday, waray siguro nimo lutu-a hin maupay salit naninimaho na an dagmay ngan barul nga bulad (lol). Didi ha States, nagda-drive pa ako up to 50 miles para la makakadto hin Asian store. Anyway, I am glad people in Tanauan are becoming more like here in the States, i.e. eating meat all the time. But as I said, eat meat in moderation because meat contains saturated fat which is very hard for our body to metabolize and get rid of. The saturated fat is responsible for raising our blood pressure (by occluding the blood flow in our arteries) thereby damaging our heart and our kidneys. Unlike here in the States where people have medical insurances, here in the Philippines and in Tanauan, in particular, people have no medical insurances. Therefore, when you get sick, the cost of the medical expenses becomes the burden of the family. Here in the States, if you get sick, the insurance will pay for your medical expenses and hospitalizations. Hence, your health now becomes your wealth. If you are healthy, you can work and earn money. When you become sick, you will end up selling up everything to pay the cost of medical expenses. I think this is something that the Philippine government should work on - providing medical insurances to its constituents. Just a thought.
