Two Tanauan Skimboard Champions Off to Malaysia

Filed Under (Skimboarding) by Ernie Teston on 13-07-2007

10_07_07_2152.jpgWe are proud to inform you that two of our young skimboarders just left for Malaysia to compete in the 1st Penang International Skimboarding Competition to be held this 14th of July. Indeed, Tanauaneños are going international!

Dariel Espada and Leo Espada, champion and 1st runner up in the recently concluded 3rd Tanauan International Skimboarding Competition, were graciously invited to compete in the said competition in Malaysia. They arrived in Manila last July 11 to meet with the sponsoring agency, Victoria, a US-based company which manufactures skimboard products. As of this day, the two could have left for Malaysia. The company as I was informed committed to shoulder their air tickets and accommodations for the said competition.

I happened to meet the two at the Mall of Asia, Manila for a short chit-chat to acquaint me of their latest journey. I enjoyed 10_07_07_2153.jpginterviewing the two as they are really keen on making a big impression in Malaysia. They were accompanied by a friend who also happens to be a Tanauaneño, but now works in Manila, Kim Rebano.

Aged 18 and 20 respectively, Dariel and Leo Espada are, you guessed it right, first cousins and are from Brgy. San Roque, Dariel has been skimboarding for four years now while Leo has been toiling the waves for five years now. Dariel has been a grand slam champion of the Tanauan skimboarding competition having won it thrice in a row.

The Local Government of Tanauan has graciously hosted their trip to Manila. No less than Mayor Roque Tiu, as I was told, will accompany the duo to give them that much-needed support.

Nevertheless, the two are still hoping to get real, full and consistent support from the government and the public sectors. The two comes from a really not well-off family and usually find it hard to raise funds whenever they are invited to compete. The same goes for other younger teeners, who cannot even afford to buy a decent skimboard which, if one purchase the branded one costs Php25,000 while the locally-made fetches at Php 700 a piece. Can any youngster readily afford to buy one? Now, this really hampers the development of the sports and the quality of skimboarders our town produces. After all, we are positioning the town as the skimboarding capital of the Philippines, right? Well, may we be apprised of the plan of our local government unit?

Anyway, let us just hope and pray the two will excellently slug it out in the said international competition as they vie for the top slot with Japanese, Malaysians, Canadians and even Americans.

Dariel and Leo, go for the top two spots!

Mabuhay ang Tanauan! Mabuhay ang mga Tanauaneno…

  1. Since we are aspiring to be the Skimboarding capital of the philippines, it is about time for our local government to find investors in the skimboard manufacturing that will be based locally. Good luck boys. May the force be with you.

  16. i agree with AA ‘73 about preparing longcoy for his future life…please let us help him to have a brighter future. Giving honor to our town specially in international scene is not easy…courage and hardwork is needed and longcoy did acquired those traits and we owe him something for giving name to our town is the international scene.

Giving him a scholarship is not burdensome on our local government!!!

  17. My Fellow Tanauananons,

I am happy to inform you that our SB upon my request will allocate funds this Monday during their regular session for the education of our two winners. Both of them will be given a monthly stipend of P1,000.00 each until they finish high school. They will automatically become college scholars of the Municipality after their graduation in High School. Longkoy and Porak are both enrolled as second year students at Killing Natl HS. Both are in school as it is now a requirement before one can join skimboarding competitions. They were enrolled last June. Adto ha Kiling kay hirayo ha dagat.

We have prepared a Heroes welcome for the two this Monday. Upon arrival at the airport, they will be received at the VIP Lounge then a motorcade is prepred for Leyte Park Hotel where a presscon will be held.
The motorcade will proceed to Tanauan where a short program will be conducted at the Amphitheater. Dinner and Dancing will end the welcome party at the Bantay Dagat area.

Indeed, all Tanauananons should be proud of Longkoy and Porak. They deserve our help. Should there be additional help for the two from any Tanauananons will be greatly appreciated by the two.

  26. I salute Mayor Roque Tiu for offering educational assistance to these deserving youths. Longkoy and Porak worked so hard to put our town in the world map and they deserve commendation and reward. AA Batch 73, I think you were the classmate of my older brother, Polding, in Assumption Academy. Please send me an e-mail. We can discuss any assistance I may be able to provide to your nephews.
